Comparing three price lists
About $930
The median gap, for a direct cremation, between the lowest of three nearby funeral homes’ posted prices and one of the three picked at random. For an immediate burial, about $1,190.
Basis: posted price lists from 306 funeral homes in DC, Maryland, Virginia and Florida, October 2026. Across 36 states and DC, our October 2026 report on posted prices found about $590 and about $630. These are differences between posted prices, not savings measured for families.
Bereavement mandate
Up to 1 year
of bereavement support Medicare requires a hospice to make available after each death (42 CFR 418.64(d)). Medicare doesn’t reimburse it (42 CFR 418.204(c)).
